REVEALING BEAUTY THROUGH DECON-

STRUCTION

FURNITURE DESIGN AND GRAPHICS

RAMAK CHAIR

Furniture design process

objective

Chair design in response to Russian deconstructivism; deconstruct and reconstruction an unrelated object to reveal the design that wants to come through.

solution.

The chosen object to destroy was a vintage tennis racket. Pictures of the original, intact racket were taken and photoshopped into an unidentifiable heap of a collage. The collage was organic in its formation; no focus was put toward the end result. After that, the racket was cut into tiny pieces and glued into a sculpture to reflect the essence of the collage. From there, elevations of the sculpture were observed and potential chair designs were extracted. The mesh netting and wooden curves of the sculpture carried the most inspiration into the final design: a chaotic web of fibers stabilized by strong wooden curves balanced over thin, geometric, metal rods. Elements from an Iakov Chernikohov painting and deconstructivist art were borrowed for the advertisement graphic and the chair rendering was completed using Rhinoceros.
